good morning, america. and breaking overnight, deadly tornado outbreak. [ sirens] severe storms tearing through the heartland turning over semis. >> this is all weather related. >> roofs ripped off homes. thousands without power. hail raining down. a dramatic rescue with more than 50 children trapped underneath the rubble. we talk to the survivors. also happening right now, locked out. new reports that one of the pilots was locked out of the cockpit right before that plane crashed in the alps. the voice recorder revealing the sounds of the pilot knocking on the door then pounding as the plane descended. the deepening mystery of what really happened on that packed airliner. new overnight, hostage hoax? that california woman who claimed she was kidnapped now found safe. police are saying not true. is this a real-life "gone girl"?

♪ the story of my life ♪ one direction, the story of one of the biggest stars walking away. was his girlfriend to blame. his fans demanding answers. children texting their parents and so many parents across the country asking, which one is he? and we do say good morning, america. and it's good to have david and t.j. back with us this thursday morning. a lot of news breaking overnight. the latest on that plane crash in a moment but we begin with a terrifying night for millions of americans. you see this. one of those twisters forming. a quiet spring erupting with the first severe storms of the season. >> the numbers are incredible robin. seven reported tornadoes in oklahoma and arkansas overnight. you can see some of the devastation right here and look at the gym where inside more

than 50 children were trapped and here you see first responders pulling a man from the wreckage. parts of oklahoma hit hard by this outbreak. >> you know our extreme weather team is covering it from all angles. rob is there in oklahoma and ginger is here to start things off. >> just imagine, robin, you're driving along the highway. this is just north of oklahoma city and the power lines start snapping. the sparks coming at you frightening images like this were happening again in moore, oklahoma hit again with a tornado. much weaker than years ago but part of the 120 plus severe storm reports that stretched from oklahoma through arkansas missouri all the way to illinois and indiana. i want to go straight into that tornado, so frightening to watch live just west of tulsa in sand springs and that is where we find our rob marciano. he got on a plane and got state there. rob, tell us what you're seeing. >> reporter: ginger violent day weatherwise and it is just a mess just to get here. look at the damage to this roof. a massive roof ripped apart

coming crashing down brick and mortar walls torn apart. dozens of children inside that area when the storms ripped through. what a frightening scene across tornado alley. [ sirens ] >> i knew that thing was coming after me. >> reporter: overnight deadly tornadoes tearing across the midwest. >> like right in front of us. >> reporter: this driver in moore, oklahoma on the highway as the twister bears down. >> look we are right on this. >> reporter: watch on the right the tornado toppling a semi. >> i've got to help this guy in the truck. >> reporter: the damaging storm struck oklahoma the hardest killing at least one person. >> oh we got another one. >> reporter: ripping roofs from houses and overturning cars. this woman inside as her truck is flipped. >> i felt glass breaking and i was on the top sliding across. i'm very fortunate. i hung upside down until somebody got here. >> reporter: near tulsa an

estimated half-mile-wide twister moving at 45 miles per hour crossing interstates. >> a semi has overturned and also a pickup truck is on its hood all weather related. >> reporter: at this gymnastics studio on the west side firefighters rescuing more than 50 children and their instructors who took shelter inside carrying them after the storm ripped through the building destroying it. fortunately, everyone made it out safely. more than 80,000 left without power as the twisters ravaged the state. >> that is serious. >> reporter: in sand springs this tornado crossing a river and colliding with power lines causing them to spark. and further south, moore, oklahoma a town devastated by an ef-5 tornado hit again overnight. a reported twister damaging homes and businesses and ripping siding from building. amid the wreckage a symbol of hope. chase rhodes tweeting just found this after the tornado. god is with us.

so far this year it has been a very very quiet severe weather year. the month of march, zero tornadoes up until yesterday and, robin, this certainly a scary reminder to the folks who live here just how awful it can be to be in tornado alley. >> all right, rob. thank you very much. joining us now our jennifer patterson the founder and director of aim high academy hit so hard and 1-year-old jamari wilson in the gym, as well. so good to see you both this morning and know that you are doing well. jennifer tell us how much warning did you have and what did you do once you knew that the tornado was possibly heading your way? >> well i knew that we had a threat of severe weather and so i went over the weather activation plan with my staff and i would say probably about 30 minutes, 20 30 minutes before it hit, the sirens

started going off. >> you had a little signal the snapping of your fingers to let everybody know to head down to the basement. >> yeah i had told all my coaches, if you see my snap my fingers and point you know what to do get those babies down in the basement as fast as you can. >> those precious baby that one you have next to you. jennifer you head down to the basement. what was it like when the tornado hit? >> oh well we were all huddled really close together and i kind of felt my insides leap up and my ears popped and then there was kind of a loud boom and a lot of rattling and the lies went out then we heard a lot of screams from a bunch of little kids. it was pretty scary at that moment. we turned our cell phone flashlights on and tried to give the kids as much light as we could and all started praying, starting sings praise and worship songs with the kids and trying to reassure them to let them know it's going to be okay. >> i love how you're reassuring jamari with the back rub. what was it like? i know it had to be scary in the

basement. can you describe what it was down there? >> well it wasn't your typical everyday life. it was very different from what we normally go through, but i knew that our coaches were guiding us to safety. >> and they did just that and what was it like when you emerged from the basement jennifer? >> oh well i went out before all of the kids did and pretty much just lost it. couldn't believe what i was seeing. it was -- i mean there was water pouring in down the stairs to the basement when we opened the door and just pretty much walked out and there was -- the roof was gone. i was devastated. >> rightfully so and understandably so and how about for you, jamari and your friends, what was it like when you emerged from the basement came out? >> it was very scary because we have done this for almost all our life and to see it gone was just horrifying for us. >> oh bless your heart.

jamari i know and for you, jennifer, the aim high academy so important for the community. i know you're thankful that everyone got out safe and sound and i'm sure you have plans to rebuild, don't you? >> we are so thankful and we are a nonprofit that this community built up so we know this community is going to help us build again and so we thank god for that. >> you are in our thoughts and prayers, thank you very much and all the best to you and everyone there going forward. you take care. >> thank you, robin. >> thank you. >> just to see her like that and set up a go fund and have a strong community. you spent a lot of time there. >> in moore, oklahoma. it always strikes us it's the coaches and teachers and instincts kick in and they save our children and jamari will be back on the mat soon. the other main news it's the midair mystery of that plane that crashed in the alps. reports revealing that one of

the pilots was locked out of the cockpit raising new questions about what really happened on that doomed flight and abc's david kerley who covers aviation with us is here this morning with the latest. >> reporter: a surprising revelation from that mangled black box, the voices the sounds according to media reports of a pilot locked out of the cockpit banging desperately on the door as the jet is plunging to earth. just a little more than a minute after the germanwings a320 reaches cruising altitude it noses down heading to the ground but there is only one pilot in the cockpit according to reports. the sounds captured on the cockpit voice recorder show the other pilot knocking then banging on the locked door to get in with no response until the jet crashes less than ten minutes after starting that descent. the mystery only deepening. did the lone pilot in the cockpit have a medical emergency becoming incapacitated, unable to respond? or is this a case of pilot suicide/murder? french investigators and the airlines have not commented on the lone pilot first reported by

"the new york times." we will learn more if the other black box can be found. that is still a priority for searchers in the french alps but not easy says our hamish macdonald. >> reporter: these mountains are not just remote they are treacherous. the hillsides are steep. the ground underfoot is loose but these blue skies today will offer the best opportunity yet to recover vital clues. >> reporter: that data recorder with all its information of what was happening on the jet systems may have broken apart. its heavy steel memory module possibly thrown hundreds of feet. >> we've seen it before and it can be difficult to find them because with i will packet like this that little device which is slightly bigger than a baseball and very dense can go quite a distance. >> reporter: also mourning for the americans we have learned were among the 150 killed in the crash. mother and daughter, yvonne and emily selke traveling on the tuesday morning flight. yvonne was a consultant for an

american intelligence agency and emily graduated from drexel university two years ago. a third american not identified yet. these reports about a pilot trying to get back in the cockpit explain why french authorities said they listened to the recording but would not say what they heard. they're trying to identify which voices they heard. which was outside and which was inside. we expect more from the airline later today to try to help solve this mystery. >> we know you'll stay on it. i want to bring john nance. great to have you with us. you heard there that the pilot and co-pilot reportedly had a very smooth conversation in the early part of the flight. one leaves the cockpit then can be heard knocking lightly then even stronger. never any answer from the cockpit. what does that tell you? >> what it tells me is that we've got one of two things just as david said. either an incapacitated pilot with a heart attack or seizure

and can't respond or somebody who doesn't want the other pilot to come back in. i think it's the former not the latter. we'll have to find that out. >> we know of the descent, 38,000 feet in just about ten minutes' time traveling but you told me before it could have been much faster. this was a standard emergency see scent. does that mean passengers could see and hear this pilot trying to pound on that door? >> at least the first half of the airplane i'm sure would have been well aware of that as the pounding got more and more aloud as i'm sure they were yelling. this is a nightmare situation to be watching one pilot in uniform outside the door trying to get into the cockpit. >> and, jon, we've all seen these fligh all been on them when the flight attendants block off the front part as the pilots use the bathroom but going into the cockpit, is it always locked and don't they have a way to get in the door themselves? >> there should be david. american airlines we've got little keypads that you have to punch a code in that's a secret code and only if the pilot inside denies it can you not get

in but for an incapacitated that would be easy to do. i don't know why they wouldn't have a system like that on this plane. that remains to be seen but apparently they could not get in the door for one reason or another. >> all right, john nance, a of questions in the days ahead. our thanks to you and imagining the fears of those passengers watching. >> i can't imagine that. now to sergeant bowe bergdahl charged with desertion and possibly facing life in prison. he was captured by the taliban after leaving his post in 2009 now speaking out about his years in captivity. abc's martha raddatz has that story. >> reporter: the charges could mean life in prison. desertion and misbehavior for endangering his fellow soldiers left to face the enemy without him. the second charge the more serious. >> the charge of misbehavior before the enemy was an un unpleasant surprise i think it was unnecessary. >> reporter: bergdahl walked away from his remote outpost in june of 2009 but within hours was captured by the taliban.

in a statement released by his lawyer describing for the first time in his own words the brutal conditions he endured. saying he was kept in isolation for the entire five years, shackled spread eagle on a bed caged, beaten and threatened constantly with execution after repeatedly trying to escape. when he was freed in a taliban prisoner exchange last year blinking after being in darkness he wept with gratitude when he was told he was going home. and at the white house, the president celebrated with bergdahl's parents. >> he wasn't forgotten by his community in idaho or the military which rallied to support the bergdahls through thick and thin. >> reporter: but bergdahl did not want to see his parents and those platoon mates he left behind began publicly criticizing him and are telling us now the charges are not harsh muff. >> there should be more consequences in my opinion and

death is certainly something that should have been considered. >> reporter: bergdahl's lawyer told us there have been not been plea negotiations yet, but in his letters to officials, he said that a trial would add to the stress bergdahl has experienced and from which he is far from recovered. he does continue to undergo psychological help as well as physical therapy. robin. >> all right, martha thank you. now to amy with the other top develops stories right now starting with new air strikes in the middle east. >> yeah this is a major developing story overnight. saudi arabia has now launched air strikes against the rebels who have taken over parts of yemen and forced the american-backed president to flee the country. we are just getting the first video of the damage from those air strikes. president obama has authorized logistical support for the saudi mission. iran calling them a dangerous step that will worsen the crisis. and meanwhile the u.s. is launching new air strikes in iraq to retake the city of tikrit from isis. an effort by iraqi forces to capture that city has failed.

back here at home the former university of oklahoma fraternity brother expelled for that racist video is speaking publicly for the first time saying he is quote, deeply sorry, levi pettit met with members of the african-american community and promised to speak out against racism. >> there are no excuses for my behavior. i never thought of myself as a racist. i never considered it a possibility. but the bottom line is that the words said in that chant were mean hateful and racist. >> the lawmakers who organized the meeting said she believes pettit's apology is genuine and she forgives him. a public health emergency declared in indiana because of an outbreak of hiv. 70 cases were confirmed in one county and that number could rise dramatically. the outbreak is tied to heroin use and needle sharing. in oklahoma, police officer's dash cam was rolling after he took off after a driver

going 90 miles an hour. he rolled over in a ditch. not injured. his cruiser badly damaged. you see it there and unfortunately that speeding driver got away. finally, a pennsylvania man recovering from surgery opened a get well card from his father in new york. inside there was a lottery ticket. when he scratched it joseph amorese suddenly felt a whole lot better. why? he won $7 million. how is that for a speedy recovery? he just had hernia surgery so hen't jump up and down but my mind was jumping up and down. >> i'm sure it was. thatch purchased that was purchased from a dollar store in new york city. >> it could happen to us. >> oh so close. >> but it didn't. >> we're hear. thank you, amy. now to ginger. those storms we were talking about moving this way. >> they are moving this way but the threat level for the severity of them so much lower. so that is great news. i want to start you out with looking at some of the huge hail

that had fallen like baseball or even tennis ball size hail in watts, oklahoma but, again, the storms today will be more of that heavy rain and a strong thunderstorm embedded in there potentially for parts of the mid-atlantic and southeast. here's how it'll go. drying out behind where there will be picking up all the pieces from the tornado and wind and hail damage. but here you go the thunderstorms ride along that cold front and even here in new york city we'll see a little bit of the action. philadelphia to d.c. you will have rain in your forecast too. mild cities now brought to you by kohl's.

good morning, america. right now scenes of devastation as seven reported tornadoes rip through oklahoma and arkansas overnight. destroying homes and businesses killing at least one person. also right now, police investigating that california woman who claimed she was kidnapped. now they're saying it was all a hoax. and the victim of a frightening road rage attack speaking out, an abc news exclusive saying she forgives the person that shot her. that person is still on the loose and hopefully they would find them soon as we say good morning, america. thankful thursday or friday eve. one more alarm clock till the weekend. >> we'll go with that. >> we love this story that you're going to bring us later. >> the leader scorer and rebounder on a sweet 16 team gave it up. he wanted his little brother to have that scholarship.

fantastic story. >> but we'll begin with that houston road rage victim robin was speaking about shot in the head last week after honking her horn at a driver who cut her off. incredibly she was still able to call 911 not realizing she had been shot in the head recovering at home speaking out about this in an abc news exclusive with an extraordinary message now for the gunman. here's abc's ryan owens. >> this is where it happened. this is where he cut me off. >> reporter: kay hafford will be the first to tell you it's a miracle she's alive. >> this is where i heard the boom. >> reporter: the 278-year-old taking us back to the very spot on interstate 45 where a gunman shot her in the head less than a week ago. >> his mission, although it was to kill me and i'm still living i know that's killing him. >> reporter: hafford was headed to work when she honked at the driver of a white chevy tahoe who she says just cut her off. minutes later police he pulled up right next to her fired a single shot through her passenger side window and took off. >> i don't know how i did it but

i pulled over here. >> reporter: despite being shot in the head hafford somehow grabbed her iphone. >> when i heard siri, i cried. i said 911. when 911 operator picked up that's when i lost it. i told 91 operator i think i have been shot. >> reporter: bullet fragments lodged in her skull but doctors removed them and she's well on her way to a full recovery. her worry now that gunman is ststill on the run. >> have you forgiven the man who did this to you. >> i forgive him right away. when i looked in his eyes i knew there was something wrong with him. all i ask is he have a heart and turn himself in. >> reporter: she has a message for other aggressive drivers. >> as much as you want to retaliate think twice because you may be in the situation like i am but you may not make it. >> reporter: for "good morning america," ryan owens, abc news on interstate 45 in houston. >> what a powerful message she has and the power of

forgiveness. >> really powerful. i'm glad she's okay. >> absolutely. now to that mystery out of california. that bay area woman who claimed she was kidnapped from her boyfriend's home then found alive hundreds of miles away. police now saying it was all a hoax. abc's aditi roy has that story for us. >> recently moved to the bay area kidnapped and possibly being held for ransom. >> i know that she just didn't let somebody come and take her. >> denise huskins vanished from her boyfriend's house yesterday. >> reporter: denise huskins' boyfriend aaron quinn reported her missing from their home earlier this week. police launched a frantic search. as her grief-stricken family -- >> just be strong and you have your family there and we'll find you. >> reporter: wonder why aaron waited ten hours to call police. >> the statement mr. quinn provided was such an incredible story we initially had a hard time believing it.

>> reporter: his story initially sounding like a scene ripped right out of a movie. >> as you all know my wife amy elliott dunn disappeared three days ago. i had nothing to do with the disappearance of my wife. >> reporter: on tuesday a break in the case when the san francisco chronicle reporting it received an e-mail with what appeared to be a hostage reporting from huskins. >> eye name is denise huskins. i'm kidnapped, otherwise i'm fine. >> reporter: along with a ransom request for $8500. but this morning a shocking twist that makes denise look like a real-life "gone girl." >> i feel like something to be jettisoned if necessary. i feel like i could disappear. >> reporter: like amy dunn denise's kidnapping was all a hoax. she is alive and well. found by police 400 miles away at her father's apartment in southern california. >> i can tell you that our investigation has concluded,

that none of the claims has been substantiated and i could go one step further to say this this was not a random act. >> reporter: while relatives indicated she would cooperate, when the police and fbi made arrangements to fly her back to northern california she disappeared again. >> as of right now, we have not heard from miss huskins and we are no longer in contact with any of the family members. >> reporter: police now looking into whether huskins and quinn who's also dropped off the grid should face any charges. >> our thanks to aditi roy. you heard him, not a random act at all. >> yeah still looking. >> yeah. want some answers. >> it's not just the tornadoes, it's record heat and issues they're facing in the west. >> the heat is what causes dust devils and this may look like a tornado to you, you're driving along the road. this is san bernardino california. you can see the dust there twirling. it's a heated column of air and kind of goes up into a cooler pocket starts twisting. they can be slightly dangerous, certainly much less than tornadoes. there will be plenty of

upside down and 50 children instructors were rescued after their gym badly damaged. also taking a direct hit was moore, oklahoma where 24 people were killed in a tornado there two years ago. abc's clayton sandell is there this morning with the very latest. good morning, clayton. >> reporter: and good morning, amy. of course we all remember what happened here in moore in may of 2013. that giant ef-5 tornado that just leveled large parts of this town. thankfully this morning, nothing quite that bad but you can see still some significant damage over about a 15 to 20-block area. trees down all over the place. look at this house, the front wall is completely blown out. you can see all the way through the house to the back wall. and then when those powerful winds move through, we had huge pieces of roofs that went flying through the air landing on these cars here and you can be thankful you weren't the guy sitting in the front seat of that pickup truck right there. now, the mayor says this tornado hopscotched through this neighborhood and he's right.

broadway is such a workout and such a test of endurance, so i would run on the treadmill and outside and sing the songs and really just try to get that into my body. >> harvey weinstein, huge name in the movie world but he's done some projects on broadway. this is his biggest on broadway. how is he doing. >> a passion for him. i told harvey a year ago, i'm basically playing you, aren't it? j.m. barrie's plays and borrowed in my imagination the kind of energy it takes to be a producer like harvey is. but i know this is a real passion for him and i applaud him for it because he is -- he's ruthless and thorough. >> and smart. >> and leaves to stone unturned. if he thinks someone is lazy or a little bit like not quite working he wants to fix it. we're still working on it. everybody says the first ten minutes needs something. we don't know what it is but we'll get there. >> light the fire. i couldn't let you guys leave
